Three leaders of the now-dissolved Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China have had their convictions overturned due to unfair trials, SCMP reports. The court ruled that police failed to prove the group was a foreign agent. While two have completed their sentences, Chow Hang-tung, the former vice-chairperson of the alliance behind the city’s annual Tiananmen Square vigil, remains in custody for a separate national security case.

Social worker convicted of rioting in Hong Kong retrial

A Hong Kong court has convicted social worker Jackie Chen of rioting over her role in the 2019 protests, as reported by Al Jazeera. She was acquitted in 2020, but a retrial was ordered after an appeal. The judge ruled her words encouraged protesters, while Chen maintained she was calling for restraint. Sentencing is set for April.

Hong Kong Security Chief criticises reporter over Thailand question

A Ming Pao reporter questioned why Security Chief Chris Tang’s Thailand trip was not announced, prompting Tang to accuse the journalist of undermining the government, according to HKFP. He defended the secrecy, citing the need to protect a Myanmar rescue operation. Ming Pao has faced repeated government criticism over its reporting and opinion pieces.

Shipping firms reassess Hong Kong amid US-China tensions

Some shipping companies are relocating operations and reflagging vessels away from Hong Kong due to fears of US sanctions and potential commandeering by Chinese authorities, Reuters reports. Growing geopolitical risks, including Beijing’s national security focus and US scrutiny of China’s merchant fleet, are prompting shipowners to hedge their exposure despite Hong Kong’s maritime advantages.

Deliveroo exits Hong Kong

Intense competition and shifting consumer habits have driven Deliveroo to exit Hong Kong, as reported by The Standard. Economist Simon Lee highlights market saturation, post-pandemic spending in mainland China, and costly promotions as key factors. Some assets will be sold to Foodpanda, but concerns remain about market sustainability and potential declines in service quality.

UK exempts Hong Kong BN(O) holders from ETA

Hongkongers with British National (Overseas) passports will no longer need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK, according to SCMP. The Home Office decided to extend the original exemption for BN(O) visa holders, recognising the close ties between the community and the UK. The rules will be amended soon, with a review for potential misuse.

Hong Kong activists to face trial over fundraising

Four Hong Kong activists, including three members of the League of Social Democrats, will stand trial in late April for collecting funds without a permit and displaying posters on government land, HKFP reports. The charges relate to street booths set up in 2023. The trial follows a series of earlier guilty pleas by other defendants.

Beijing warns UK against provoking tensions over South China Sea

China warned the UK on 11 March against escalating tensions in the South China Sea after UK Foreign Minister David Lammy condemned Beijing’s actions in the disputed waters, calling them “dangerous and destabilising”, according to CNA. China reiterated its claim over the region and urged the UK to respect its territorial sovereignty.
